Season in full swing for athletes at all levels

Sligo Triathlon Club
members are competing the length and breadth the country and further afield. Saturday saw club member  Eamon McAndrew  winning the Ballina Salmon Run Sprint Triathlon, in his home town.   Four members travelled to German for the Roth Ironman Triathlon.  This was hot on the heels of another group who headed to Austria the previous weekend for a similar race.  The water was so warm (24degrees) that wetsuits were banned.  As a comparison, water temperature in Rosses Point is about 13 degrees at the moment.  Competitors took part in events in Galway and Mullingar too. This weekend.

Nearer home, 40 club members are poised to take part in the ‘Warrior of the Sea’ race on this Saturday.  It is a 6km sea swim between Rosses Point and Strandhill which takes place for the third year.  Over 120 entries are expected for this challenging event.

Excitement is mounting for the Triathlon Festival in Rosses Point running over the August Bank Holiday, a fun family affair, you can get more details on  www.sligotriathlon.ie

Sligo Rovers will face FC Spartak Trnava in the second round of Europa League qualifying.

The Bit o’ Red will be away from home in the first leg, before a return game in The Showgrounds.

The ties will take place on 19 and 26 July.

Manager Ian Baraclough said: “They are really going to test us. They look a very good side. Obviously I’m going to try to do as much research as possible in the build-up to the game. They’ve had plenty of experience in Europe and a lot more success than us but sometimes that isn’t always a deciding factor.

“It is something we will relish and another challenge for the club that we’re all looking forward to. We will be the underdog, but it is a chance to try to create a small bit of history and improve our record in European competitions.”

There are 1,200 tickets already sold for the home leg on 26 July. They will continue to be on sale in the Showgrounds every day this week from 11am to 6pm. It is hoped the match will mark a record attendance for an all-seater game in The Showgrounds.

Tickets cost €25 for adults and €10 for U-16's.

The Event is being run by "Wots Adventure", a Sligo based adventure sports event management group and are being kindly supported by the charity group "The Carers Association". A percentage of the proceeds made will be going towards this great charity.

The official launch of the event is on Thursday 7th June at 7pm in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Sligo.

A spokesperson said, "We would like as many people, groups and businesses to benefit from this fantastic event and as such would invite anyone interested to contact us should they think their business could help out in any way. There are many opportunities for local businesses to get involved. The aim is to help promote business and as such most of these opportunities DO NOT involve sponsorship money."

Sligo Yacht Club News

The sunny weather brought lovely sea breezes and the sailors out onto Sligo Bay this week. The GP14 fleet had fourteen boats out racing on Tuesday which is very good for the time of year. Normally the fleet isn’t fully active until well into June. Diarmaid Mullen returned to sailing and to the front of the fleet this week after an absence of a few years. Ruth Galbraith also returned to racing after a few weeks reacquainting herself with her boat. With a number of boats staying on shore due to work commitments it is promising to be a very busy year for the GP fleet.

The Optimist is making a resurgence in Sligo yacht Club. This small eight foot dinghy is sailed by children up to about 15 years of age. It was designed in 1947 and has been an important teaching boat since then. Indeed Timmy Corcoran, one of our most successful sailors, began sailing in an Optimist racing against Conal Henry. The Opti’s as they are known by, are rigged by parents and are towed around Deadman’s Point from which the young sailors learn how to sail their craft in games like follow the leader. Should you or your child wish to join them contact Mick Spain, or call down around 11:00am on Sunday morning.

The Mirror fleet are beginning to come out in bigger numbers as the school holidays have begun. They are going out with the GP fleet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Sunday afternoons. As the Irish Mirror Association’s Championship of Ireland is being held in Sligo this year, the more training and preparation you can have prior to the event the better.

The cruisers are continuing with their racing on Wednesday and Friday evenings and are preparing for the Northwest Offshore Racing Associations Championship which will be co-hosted by Mullaghmore Sailing Club, and Killybegs Sailing Club, with the first weekends sailing in Sligo.
