THERE WAS was only one game last week in the Sligo Rovers 11-A-Side Astro Turf League but it was a crunch one in terms of the title race in Division One.
Reigning champions Sligo Plumbing & Heating took on Gannon & McNamara Electrical Limited. Last year these two sides were locked in a tight battle for the Packie McGowan Memorial Cup with S.P.H. eventually winning by two points.
This season has seen a collapse in form by S.P.H. and they are heading for a mid-table finish. Gannon & McNamara though are a side in form and they are keen to add to the Socrates Healthcare Informatics Cup that they won earlier in the season.
Gannon & McNamara started the better with both Darren Kelly and Conor O’Grady going close with long range strikes although neither hit the target.
S.P.H. then nearly caught them on the counter as Michael Walsh played in Anthony Henneberry whose shot drifted narrowly wide of the post. Gannon & McNamara then took the lead. Kiki O’Grady then played a simple ball over the top when came to Kelly and while the S.P.H. shouted for offside he calmly picked his spot in the corner. Minutes later and it was two. Graham Kelly with a run down the right and he whipped it a dangerous ball across the face of the goal where it was turned into the net by Darren Kelly. Just before half-time and they made it three. Liam McCarrick set up Kiki O’Grady who shot high into the roof of the net.
The second half saw an improvement in form from S.P.H. and they nearly got themselves back into the game when a good move saw Tommy Clarke link up with Mark Cunningham to play in Barry Sheerin but his effort was saved by Mark Rooney in the Gannon & McNamara goal. Rooney was called into action again with ten minutes to go. Paul Keaveney had a shot that was saved and the former Merville United man reacted well to keep out Cunningham’s rebound. That 3-0 win means that Gannon & McNamara are now eleven points behind Fiddler’s but they do have two games in hand.
