Phased delivery for new Sligo library

THE PROPOSED new public library in Sligo town would be delivered in stages, it was confirmed last week.

County Librarian Donal Tinney was briefing members of the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) of Sligo County Council on Thursday last.

Mr Tinney did not offer members any timeframe for a completion of the proposed project.

No indication was given on the role in any new set-up of the County Museum, which is housed beside the existing library in Stephen Street.

Thee are no indications as yet on the future role and usage of the existing library building.

Proposals for a new library in Castle Street were submitted by Sligo County Council in the past three weeks to the central funding authority.

Members of the SPC heard at last week's meeting thad An Comhairle Leabharlanna had earlier indicated to the Council there was "a strong possibility" that Sligo could be considered for capital funding in 2013.

Sligo's submission, SPC members were told, stipulated that it would only undertake a major capital project like developing a new library if 100% funding is offered.
