Sligo County Council is set to receive €448,000 in funding for remedial repair works of damage caused by severe weather last winter, however Sinn Féin Councillor Thomas Healy is pushing for further flood preventative works to be carried out.“I wish to welcome the allocation of funding from Transport Infrastructure Ireland for repair works to be carried out to damaged infrastructure from the floods last winter,” stated Cllr Healy.
“Having dealt directly with families and business affected by the flooding last winter I am all too aware of the hardship and heartache caused by this damage. Ballisadare will benefit from €160,000 allocation whilst North Sligo from Grange to Cliffoney will receive €113,000.
"This funding is very welcome and will allow for wider pipes and grating to be installed along primary and secondary routes. However prevention is always better than cure. I have asked Council officials to make an application for funding from the OPW exploring the feasibility of providing for flood prevention schemes.
"It is essential that rivers are cleared and drained properly, water will always find its own level so it is vital to invest in preventative measures rather than remedial works for the long term benefit of the County,” concluded the former Mayor of Sligo.
