Sligo Fine Gael row, new details emerge

FURTHER DETAILS have emerged of last year's row inside local Fine Gael as it tried to pick runners for the general election.

The height of the row saw Sligo TD John Perry shafted by his own party.....but later added back to the ticket.

It has now emerged Fine Gael was recently requested to provide some of its records to Ita Reynolds, pictured, sister of successful selection convention candidate Gerry Reynolds.

Hand Over

The request came from her lawyers, according to The Sunday Times yesterday.

Said the newspaper:  ''Her solicitors have written to Fine Gael accusing head office of reneging on an agreement to hand over documents relating to the Perry case.''

However, no records were forthcoming: ''The legal case is now closed'' is the party's stock reply to allcomers.

It adds: ''The party has no further comment to make on the matter.''

Innocent Explanation

The newspaper recalled how ex Sligo TD John Perry told the High Court Ita Reynolds had placed four ballots in the box at the selection convention held in Drumshanbo.

However, it is believed there was an innocent explanation for this incident.

Ms Reynolds was placing ballots in the box for elderly delegates at the party convention.

The convention saw sitting TD John Perry deselected after 19 years in the Dail.

The party later added him after a High Court hearing and discovery of documents relating to the running of the delegate convention in Drumshanbo.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael has not responded any further to contacts made by John Perry.
