A letter confirming the commencement date of follow-up mammography service in Sligo has been received this week by Save Our Cancer Service-NW.The campaigning group were informed on Wednesday that the service will commence at Sligo University Hospital on Monday 14th November.
The mobile unit manned by two fully qualified and registered Radiographers, will be under the governance of the Symptomatic Breast Disease service at University Hospital Galway (UHG).
The letter, in response to a query by Jim O'Sullivan of the Save Our Cancer Service-NW, stated that the Minister for Health, Simon Harris confirmed the service is to provide surveillance mammography (i.e. follow up mammography for patients who have been treated for breast cancer), in a location that is more convenient for them. The service commencing on 14 November 2016 for breast cancer patients who are 5 years post treatment.
It will be provided by a mobile unit on the grounds of Sligo University Hospital.
It is envisaged that the service will be available twice during 2017 for a period of up to one week per visit.
