Sligo was temporarily decked out in purple recently as local shops and shoppers took part in a weekend celebration of the Purple Flag. This internationally recognised award celebrates safety and culture in a town or city's evening and night-time economy, an accolade that Sligo recently was awarded for a second year in a row.
Other destinations that have won this award include, Westport, Killarney, Galway and Dublin – all of whom marked the weekend with a variety of events and activities.
As part of the celebrations Sligo Business Improvement District (BID) ran a competition for local businesses who had dressed their shop windows with a purple theme and the BID was delighted with the number of entries in this year’s competition. The winner for the competition is local designer, Martina Hamilton of The Cat and the Moon, Castle Street in Sligo.
As the competition winners, The Cat and the Moon received a cash prize of €250. Pictured above is owner Martina Hamilton (Centre) with BID Chairperson, Finbarr Filan (L) and BID CEO Gail McGibbon.
The work of the Purple Flag committee is supported by Sligo County Council, Sligo Tidy Towns, Sligo Tourism, Sligo Chamber, the Gardai and taxi representatives.
