IT Sligo to host inaugural Ecology and Evolution Ireland conference

The first ever Ecology and Evolution Ireland conference will be held in IT Sligo from November 24th to 26th.

This event will mark the official launch of the newly formed Irish Ecological Association (IEA), and aims to increase the visibility of the discipline of ecology in Ireland, as well as raising the international profile of the Association.

The three-day conference will provide an opportunity for networking among ecology researchers and practitioners based in Ireland or with an interest in Irish ecosystems. It will also be a forum for dissemination of the latest research developments in ecology and evolution.

“The conference promises an exciting mix of attendees from practitioners and consultants to established and early career stage academics,” explains Dr Caroline Sullivan, who’s a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Environmental Science at IT Sligo, and the conference coordinator. “There will be a strong focus on networking and supporting ecology students.”

The conference, which is funded by the Marine Institute and Environmental Protection Agency, begins on Thursday, November 24th at 19:30 with a public lecture in the Institute’s Aurivo Auditorium by Professor Ian Montgomery of Queens University, Belfast, entitled: ‘Natives and invaders: the ecological impact of Ireland’s introduced mammals’.

The programme is packed with stimulating presentations and workshops. Professor Jane Memmott (University of Bristol), Doctor Dara Stanley (NUI Galway) and Doctor Tom Doyle (NUI Galway) will also deliver plenary talks on Restoration Ecology, Pesticides and Bees and Jellyfish Ecology respectively.

There will also be workshops on Ecological Monitoring, Research Ethics, Getting Published, Academic and Alternative Careers and Science Communication.

The event organisers will also showcase West of Ireland produce and promote sustainability during the three-day conference.
