Gardaí renew appeal over violent assault on student

Gardaí in Co Kildare have renewed their appeal for information following a violent assault on an 18-year-old student in Maynooth.

The woman sustained serious head injuries during the assault and was found unconscious on a footpath in the Moyglare Abbey estate at about 8.30pm on Sunday.

RTÉ reports that at a briefing, Superintendent Gerry Wall named the victim as Kym Owens from Castleblaney in Co Monaghan.

The first year arts student is in a serious but stable condition at Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, having sustained extensive head injuries.

Gardaí said the attack happened between 8.15pm and 8.30pm.

Ms Owens is described as being 1.65m (5’3") tall, with long brown hair. She was wearing a dark green coat at the time of the assault, along with a red hoodie, black jeans and white Converse runners.

Gardaí said they have not ruled out the possibility that Ms Owens may have been attacked by someone she knew, or by somebody travelling on the same bus from Monaghan.

They also said there is a possibility there may have been more than one perpetrator.

Supt Wall said such an attack was "very rare" and said extra resources have been allocated to the area in the wake of the assault.

He appealed to witnesses who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area on Sunday night - or seen anybody who may have appeared agitated or with marks to their body or clothing - to contact them at Leixlip Garda Station on 01-6667800, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line, 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
