Sligo awarded coach friendly destination status

Sligo’s appeal as a tourist destination continues to grow thanks to the work of Sligo Business Improvement District (BID) and Sligo County Council. Following completion of a number of successful projects over the last two years which resulted in  winning the Purple Flag and a highly commended award from the Association of Town and City Centre Management (UK and Ireland), Sligo now adds another  first to the list - that of a Coach Friendly Destination.

The first such award in Ireland given by the Coach Tourism Transport Council of Ireland, representatives from Sligo County Council and Sligo BID were delighted to accept the certification at a recent tourism industry tradeshow.

Representatives of Sligo BID and Sligo County Council attended the Coach Tourism Transport Council Tradeshow Show (CTTC) at the RDS in Dublin on the 12th and 13th of November. As part of the tradeshow the CTTC presented Sligo with their award, as the first certified “Coach Friendly Destination” in Ireland. Certification is valid for two years, at which point Sligo will have to reapply again.

Part of recognising the work undertaken by the Roads Department of Sligo County Council under the stewardship of Brian Flynn, CTTC noted the  installation of new bus shelters, lighting, paving on Markievicz Road and CCTV cameras in the new dedicated coach parking on Connaughton Road. The final step of certification will take place after the new signage is installed in December.

A second notable achievement recognised by CTTC was the partnership approach developed between Sligo County Council and Sligo BID. This partnership was held as an example of exemplary cooperation that allowed the project to be completed in eighteen months, while other destinations have been trying to develop dedicated coach park space for many years.

Speaking on behalf of Sligo County Council and Sligo BID, Cllr Rosaleen O’Grady and Chairperson of Sligo BID Finbarr Filan said “We are delighted to have our work recognised here today and most importantly we are so pleased to meet so many coach operators and tour operators and take them through the improvements that we have made in Sligo. Attending this show was all about selling Sligo as a destination for the year 2018.”
