8 Reasons Why You Should Visit Sligo in 2017

By James Foley

Looking for somewhere to go in 2017? Sligo is the place to be in 2017. We got in touch with the people of Sligo on why people should visit.

1.     The Best of Everything

Val Robus, a blogger from Sligo says “We have the best of everything in Sligo; from beaches to forests, mountains and lakes. I believe it's the most scenic county in Ireland and so often overlooked. Sligo will take your breath away”

2.       A Warm Welcome

Fiona Timoney, director at Lollypotz Ireland says, “What makes Sligo great is the warm welcome you get when you come here, whether it's for a day visit, a holiday, or moving here permanently, like we did in 2014. Other business owners could not have been more supportive when we started trading on O'Connell Street, and we were made to feel right at home right away.”

3.       Beautiful Landscape

Anthony from Strandhill says, “What makes Sligo great is its beautiful landscape with breath-taking scenery fantastic food and our famous beaches. Situated on the rugged Wild Atlantic Way and known as Shelly place it's no wonder we have the finest freshest seafood. We are the envy of many and the adventure capital of Ireland with world famous surf breaks it's easy to understand. Finally with a great respect for our famous poet WB and his love affair with Sligo I'm one very proud Sligo man who loves his County .To the waters and the wild, with a faery, hand in hand.”

4.      Sligo has fought to maintain its identity

Claire Ronan a presenter in Sligo says, “Sligo is a little piece of heaven in the North West of Ireland.

We have indigenous shops, which are lacking from the main streets in many of the other towns in Ireland.

In some ways, some other towns are losing their identity but Sligo has fought to maintain its identity.

I think what Sligo has above all and the most precious gift of all, is a lovely group of people who live here, they are friendly and warm and delighted to welcome visitors from whatever part of the world they are from.

5.     Sligo Has it All

Karen Gallagher, Reception Manager of Clayton Hotel Sligo says, “Sligo has it all, so much to see and do!  We have beautiful scenery complimented by activities for young and old alike.  Whether you want a relaxing break with walks on the beach and spa treatments, or if its mountain climbing and surfing you are after Sligo really does offer it all, come and see!”

6.       Diversity

Brid Torrades of Osta Cafe & Wine Bar, “What makes Sligo great for me is the diversity!  Diversity of people, landscape and culture!   People from all backgrounds are shaping the county with their generosity in volunteer, their talents and welcoming personalities.  Sligo is a melting pot of music, literature, performing and visual arts and its beautiful landscape has everything you need to be able to enjoy the outdoors - from gently riverbank walks to exciting adventure sports!”

 7.    Affordable
