Rosses Point pier upgrade gets approval

Fine Gael T.D. for Sligo Leitrim, Tony McLoughlin has welcomed confirmation from the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government that plans for the long awaited upgrade works for Rosses Point Pier have been granted approval by the Department, with a Foreshore License being granted to Sligo County Council for the development this week.

Deputy McLoughlin stated, “after months of making consistent representations about this major issue for the local community in Rosses Point, I have been advised personally this week by Minister Simon Coveney TD, that the application to carry out pier enhancement works at Rosses Point has been approved by his Department and that the project can now apply for funding for the project in 2017, under the specific funding mechanism for piers.

“I am delighted that this foreshore license is now in place and that the next application made by Sligo County Council can be considered by the Department as all requirements will now be in place.

“One might recall, in 2015, I was successful in my efforts at lobbying Minister Coveney for funding for this project. However, at a later date it transpired that the funding could not be drawn down as there was no foreshore licence in place for the development.

“This has now been rectified and I see no reason why this essential development should not receive grant funding in 2017.

“The upgrade works will involve the extension to the slipway and remedial works to the existing slipway, provision of a floating pontoon and access gangway and mooring/anchoring arrangements at the pier," concluded the Sligo based TD.
