Two investigations launched following fatal Sligo landslide

Two investigations are underway into the death of a man in County Sligo yesterday.

It happened at a windfarm at Glen in Ballyfarnon at about 6.30pm in the evening.

It is believed the man and a colleague were working with a machine on a mountainside when there was slippage of land.

A landslide occurred at the scene, and the man - who was in his late 30's and married - fell down an embankment.

A search and rescue operation by emergency services, assisted by the Sligo/Leitrim Mountain Rescue, was launched in difficult terrain and weather conditions.

His body was recovered in the early hours of this morning at approximately 2am.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been taken to Sligo University Hospital for a post mortem.

It is understood that the man was not local but was living in Co Leitrim.

Gardai and the Health and Safety Authority are investigating.
