'No money misused in local public body' - PAC

AN ALLEGATION that money was misappropriated in a local public body has been dismissed.

An individual had contacted the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee, it emerged at its meeting earlier this week.

''Misappropriation of public money in the Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board'' was the summary of the allegation outlined by Committee Chair, Sean Fleming.

The Department of Education and Skills acknowledged to the Committee it was aware of the allegation.

Added its Secretary General Sean O Foghlu: ''The Department regards the use of the funding as appropriate in this case.''

Matter Closed

Chair Sean Fleming suggested that ''we send a copy of this correspondence to the individual and that we now consider the matter closed. Is that agreed? Agreed.''

The specifics of the allegation were not publicly outlined at this week's meeting.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is regarded as the most powerful of the Joint Oireachtas Committees.

Membership of the PAC is made up of both Senators and TDs.
