Sligo borough boundary remains unchanged

SLIGO BOROUGH boundary will not be extended any time soon -- even after recent demographic changes.

That was the import of Minister Simon Coveney's answer when the issue was raised in the Dáil this week.

Local TD Tony McLoughlin asked the Minister if his Department will extend the borough boundary.

Reasons cited by the Sligo TD included ''the fact the current jurisdictional boundaries do not align with the recent demographic developments in the Sligo borough area.''

Potential Measures

MInister Coveney said any possible alteration of the Borough District of Sligo would fall to be considered ''in the context of review of local electoral areas.''

''The configuration of local electoral areas,'' he said, ''is among the specific issues to be considered in the context of a report to be submitted to Government and the Oireachtas by mid-2017.''

Under scrutiny, said the Minister, ''will be potential measures to boost local government leadership and accountability.

The review would also seek to ensure that local government structures and responsibilities ''strengthen local democracy,''said Minister Coveney.
