€63,000 for Sligo and Leitrim Animal Welfare Organisations

An allocation of €63,000 to eight animal welfare organisations in both Sligo and Leitrim have been announced by the Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed.

Sligo/Leitrim TD Tony McLoughlin and Cathaoirleach of Ballymote/Tubbercurry and West Sligo Municipal District Cllr Dara Mulvey are delighted with the news.

Deputy McLoughlin said, “This dedicated funding, which will be allocated immediately, will further support the efforts of these organisations in order to help them to continue to care for the welfare of animals in this constituency.

The organisations which received funding today are as follows;

Fairyglen Animal Sanctuary, Arigna, Co. Leitrim, €10,000
Eagles Flying/Irish Raptor Research Centre, Portinch, Ballymote, Co. Sligo, €10,000
Kath's Kitty Corner, Oldrock, Ballymote, Co. Sligo, €3,500
Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre Ltd, Drumkeeran, Co. Leitrim, €17,000
Little Wings Bird Sanctuary, Banada, Co. Sligo, €3,000
Precious Paws Animal Sanctuary, Gurteen, Co. Sligo, €3,500
Sathya Sai Sanctuary Trust For Nature, Castlebaldwin, Co. Sligo, €12,000
Sligo Dog Welfare,  Drumcliffe, Sligo, €4,000.

These local animal welfare organisations contribute greatly to protecting animals, by providing sanctuary for in many instances surrendered, abandoned and at-risk animals and the funding being awarded is evidence of the Department of Agriculture’s on-going commitment in the area of animal welfare and is a recognition of the important role played by these organisations in safeguarding animals particularly pet and companion animals.

“I am sure this funding will be put to very good use by these wonderful animal welfare organisations and I am glad to see that they are being supported financially in their efforts by Government today” concluded Deputy McLoughlin.

Cllr Mulvey expressed his delight that six of the welfare organisations are in Sligo which between them are to receive a total of €38,000.
