An allocation of €63,000 to eight animal welfare organisations in both
Sligo and Leitrim have been announced by the Minister for Agriculture,
Sligo/Leitrim TD Tony McLoughlin and Cathaoirleach
of Ballymote/Tubbercurry and West Sligo Municipal District Cllr Dara
Mulvey are delighted with the news.
Deputy McLoughlin said, “This
dedicated funding, which will be allocated immediately, will further
support the efforts of these organisations in order to help them to
continue to care for the welfare of animals in this constituency.
The organisations which received funding today are as follows;
Fairyglen Animal Sanctuary, Arigna, Co. Leitrim, €10,000
Eagles Flying/Irish Raptor Research Centre, Portinch, Ballymote, Co. Sligo, €10,000
Kath's Kitty Corner, Oldrock, Ballymote, Co. Sligo, €3,500
Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre Ltd, Drumkeeran, Co. Leitrim, €17,000
Little Wings Bird Sanctuary, Banada, Co. Sligo, €3,000
Precious Paws Animal Sanctuary, Gurteen, Co. Sligo, €3,500
Sathya Sai Sanctuary Trust For Nature, Castlebaldwin, Co. Sligo, €12,000
Sligo Dog Welfare, Drumcliffe, Sligo, €4,000.
local animal welfare organisations contribute greatly to protecting
animals, by providing sanctuary for in many instances surrendered,
abandoned and at-risk animals and the funding being awarded is evidence
of the Department of Agriculture’s on-going commitment in the area of
animal welfare and is a recognition of the important role played by
these organisations in safeguarding animals particularly pet and
“I am sure this funding will be put to very
good use by these wonderful animal welfare organisations and I am glad
to see that they are being supported financially in their efforts by
Government today” concluded Deputy McLoughlin.
Cllr Mulvey expressed
his delight that six of the welfare organisations are in Sligo which
between them are to receive a total of €38,000.
