THE 800th anniversary of the founding of the Dominican Order was marked at local Masses in Sligo yesterday, Thursday.
The Order came to Sligo in 1252 and has been present in the town ever since.
This is the longest presence in an Irish town, locals heard yesterday.
The Dominicans original site in Sligo was The Abbey. The 13th century ruin is now the town's top tourist attraction.
