Funeral today of retired senior diplomat

THE FUNERAL takes place of retired senior diplomat Dermot Gallagher later today, Wednesday.

He is survived by wife, family and three brothers including Lionel Gallagher, Sligo.

A native of Carrick, Co Leitrim, the late Mr Gallagher served as Ireland's Ambassador to Washington in the early stages of the peace process. 

He was later Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin -- the most senior civil servant in that office.

Deceased also assisted a number of voluntary organisations in this region in their various contacts with governments, seeking funds.

Mr Gallagher, aged 72, died last weekend in the Mater Private Hospital. 

He was the son of a Garda sergeant whose colleagues included the late Jeff McLoughlin, uncle of current local TD Tony McLoughlin.

Mr Gallagher is survived by wife Maeve, daughters Fiona and Aoife, son Ronan, along with brothers Niall, Lionel and Brian.

Following his funeral Mass this morning, the late Mr Gallagher will be buried in Ratoath, Co Meath.
