Sligo link wiped out by 'earthquake' fires

AN AREA of South America which honours the Sligo links of its liberator was destroyed in vast forest fires at the weekend.

''The O'Higgins Region'' in Chile was declared a state of catastrophe by its authorities.

It honours Bernardo O'Higgins whose Sligo links are marked with statues at Ballindoon and in the car park at rear of Bank of Ireland in the town centre.

The forest fires -- in an area as big as big as the European city of Vienna -- are the worst seen in decades, say locals.

The disaster has been described as "a sort of earthquake" for the region.
