American visitor, 1916, pushed up overtime bill for Gardai

THE VISIT of an American Vice President to the west last year pumped the local bill for Garda overtime.

Sligo TD Tony McLoughlin got the info recently from the Minister for Justice.

The figures show that Garda overtime in the Sligo, Leitrim region was the lowest in the country in both 2015 and 2016.

Anti Crime

Details supplied to the Minister by the Garda authorities confirm that the visit of ex American Vice President Joe Biden jacked up the overtime bill.

It is expected that the incoming American Vice President Mike Pence will make a formal visit to his roots in Sligo and Clare.

The new figures show that extensive costs would be involved to properly protect Pence on such a visit here.

Other events which added to everyday Garda costs last year included the 1916 centenary celebrations and specific anti crime moves such as Operation Thor.

The breakdown of all Garda overtime was given to Deputy McLoughlin as follows:-
