Sligo GAA launch new AbbVie sponsored kit

Sligo GAA officially unveiled its new 2017 county jersey this week at a special launch event in AbbVie’s Ballytivnan facility.

The local biopharmaceutical company agreed a three year sponsorship deal with the county board at the end of 2015 which saw the AbbVie logo appear on all Senior, U-21 and Junior football team jerseys.

The partnership – the only one in Ireland involving a multinational pharmaceutical company and an inter-county team – forms part of AbbVie’s ongoing commitment support the health and wellbeing of local communities.

Members of the Sligo senior squad, including Captain, Neil Ewing and Stephen Gilmartin, helped showcase the new kit at AbbVie’s medical device centre of excellence. The eye-catching jersey continues to feature the AbbVie logo on the front and associated sponsor branding from IT Sligo on the back but includes several new design flourishes. The jersey now sports red detail on the sleeves, dark grey shadow hoops and a Sligo crest on the lower back alongside the title of the WB Yeats play The Land of Heart’s Desire.

The new O’Neills jersey will make its first competitive appearance in Markievicz Park when Sligo commences its Division 3 campaign with a home fixture against Armagh on Sunday February 5th.

AbbVie and Sligo IT work together across a number of engineering and science-based educational projects so the presence of the two logos on the Sligo team jerseys reflects close ties between both entities. AbbVie and IT Sligo also recently launched a number of elite level sports scholarships aimed students with current and future sports scholars who are taking courses at IT Sligo in Precision Engineering, Mechatronics and Biomedical Science courses.

County Board Treasurer Peter Greene was joined by members of the Sligo GAA Executive to formally unveil the new strip and he thanked AbbVie for their continued commitment to help the organisation nurture and enhance the game in Sligo.

Commenting on the ongoing relationship with AbbVie Joe Taaffe, Chairman of Sligo County Board said: “The Sligo County Board is deeply grateful to AbbVie for their continued financial support which in conjunction with our associate sponsor IT Sligo and our new kit provider O Neill's is a fantastic combination for the coming year.

I’d also like to compliment the company on their contribution to both the GAA community and the local economy. Their efforts ensure our children have an opportunity to acquire local jobs and in turn ensure they have an opportunity to participate in their local clubs,” he added.

AbbVie has two plants in Sligo, one in Ballytivnan and the other at Manorhamilton Road. Many of the company’s 300-plus employees are currently involved in GAA or have previously played the sport at various levels.

Joe Kumor, AbbVie Ballytivnan’s Site Director said: “We are delighted that our support of Sligo GAA is having a positive impact on the sport’s development as well as on our local community. AbbVie is proud to be supporting an organisation that reflects our own commitment to make a positive impact on people’s lives.”

Darragh Pattwell, Site Director, AbbVie’s Manorhamilton Road site said: “Sport and the GAA in particular plays a very important role in the lives of many of our employees in Sligo, and indeed in the lives of our employees at other AbbVie locations in Cork and Dublin. So it’s pleasing to be in a position to help nurture and support the game. Both organisations are passionate about success and we look forward to another exciting season ahead.”
