Funeral today of Sligo Boys Club founder

THE FUNERAL takes place of the late Canon Gerry Donnelly this afternoon, Saturday.

Aged 99, he served in several parts of the Elphin Diocese over the decades.

These included Sligo town in the early 1960s, where he was curate at the Cathedral and the newly built St Anne's Church.

Fr Donnelly also established a youth club, the Boys Club, at O'Connell Street in Sligo.

Facilities at the club included an indoor soccer pitch, regarded as modern in its era.

The Boys Club also fielded teams in local and Connacht soccer competitions.

Among the club's best remembered protégés was the teenage Tony Fagan.

He netted six times in one game for the Boys Club against Galway opposition.

The late Fr Donnelly will be buried in the grounds of St Mary's Church, Ballygar, Co Galway after funeral Mass at 1.30pm this afternoon.

Deceased previously served as parish priest in Ballygar.

A native of Kiltoom, Co Roscommon he is predeceased by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
