A spokesperson for Minister for Health Simon Harris has said he understands that the Health Service Executive is endeavouring to make contact with garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe.RTÉ
reports that yesterday, Sergeant McCabe and his wife texted an official in the Department of Health rejecting the HSE's explanation and an apology over a file by Tusla containing false allegations of sexual abuse against Sgt McCabe.The spokesperson said that the minister is eager that the work of the Charleton Commission for Investigation gets under way as quickly as possible.
The commission is to examine whether there was a smear campaign against Sgt McCabe orchestrated by senior gardaí.Yesterday, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin disputed a claim by Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald that she had no knowledge of a file by Tusla until it was revealed on RTÉ’s Prime Time on Thursday night.
Fianna Fáil said it raised the matter with Ms Fitzgerald last Wednesday.
