Sligo station on 'timely' wish list of Minister

THE MINISTER for Justice wants the programme for building new Garda stations, including Sligo, to now move ahead ''in a timely way.''

Frances Fitzgerald referred to three new stations when she spoke in the Dáil yesterday, Thursday.

The stations are at Sligo, Clonmel in Tipperary and Macroom in Cork.

A public private partnership will deliver these stations, including Sligo, said the Minister.

Minister Fitzgerald restated her commitment that a new regional HQ is additionally planned for Sligo. See link below

The matter was raised yesterday by independent TD Mattie McGrath who sought details of the plans for a new station in Clonmel.

''The proposed new station,'' said the Minister, ''will form part of a number of stations that are to be built by means of public private partnership.

''That includes new developments at Sligo and Macroom. We want a new regional headquarters in Sligo as well.

''I have been at some of the meetings myself because I brought the different groups from the OPW, the Garda and the Department of Justice and Equality together,'' said the Minister.

Moves Ahead

These meetings, said the Minister, were '"to discuss the building programme and to make sure that it now moves ahead in a timely way.''

''We do want,'' said the Minister, ''to deliver these new builds.''

Not Encouraging

The overnight news for the Minister herself may not be so encouraging.

A report in today's Irish Examiner suggests that 'loyalists' close to Taoiseach Enda Kenny may be dropped from Cabinet by the incoming party leader.
