Bree is guest speaker at Tyrone event

Sligo Independent councillor Declan Bree will be one of the guest speakers at the Annual Charlie Donnelly Winter School which takes place in Dungannon, Co Tyrone, this weekend (24th/25th February).

Cllr Bree will address the event on Saturday afternoon.  Other guest speakers include the former M.P. Bernadette (Devlin) McAliskey, Thomas Pringle T.D. and the Dublin independent councillor Ciaran Perry.

The historian Brian Hanley will speak on the life and times of Charlie Donnelly and Mr Tommy McKearney, author, political activist and former H Block prisoner will speak on the history of the Labour Movement and Left Republicanism in East Tyrone.   

The Mayor of Vacia Madrid will give a solidarity address on behalf of the people of Madrid.

The annual school is held to honour the memory of Charlie Donnelly, the Irish poet, left wing political activist and member of the International Brigades who was killed during the Spanish Civil war.

Donnelly died in action in the Battle of Jarama, near Madrid, on the 27th February 1937.  This year marks the 80th anniversary of his death.
