Sligo-based TD Tony McLoughlin has said that with the Summer holiday period fast approaching, in order to ensure that families receive their passports in time, he believes that passport applications must be submitted at least 25 working days in advanced of travel and that the standard 15 day Passport Express service should not be relied on until further notice. “This is because the Passport office in Dublin is currently experiencing very high volumes of requests for passports due to the Brexit spikes and I am advised that there are currently 60,000 passport applications in the Dublin office” stated McLoughlin.
“My office has been inundated with request from the public seeking to understand why their passports have not arrived in time and what is the reasons for a delay.
“Whilst there have been many families which I have been able to assist recently, unfortunately there are also many families which I have not been able to help due to the delays”. “Passport applications need to be submitted earlier than the ten days advertised on the Passport Office website”.
“If your date of travel is less than this allowed time period, I advise you not to submit a regular Express Passport application. Instead, you should make an appointment with the Passport Office in Dublin (www.passportappointments.ie) online, and make arrangements to travel to Dublin for faster processing. “It is heart-breaking to have to tell a person that their holiday plans are not going to materialise now due to a delay in receiving their new passports.
“Please do not put off applying for your passports and ensure that they are sent in early to avoid disappointment” concluded McLoughlin.
