The Travelling Community is to be recognised as an ethnic minority today.
A formal declaration is to be made in the Dáil by Taoiseach Enda Kenny this evening.
The move follows discussions in Cabinet and a report from an Oireachtas committee earlier this year.
It is not thought that the decision will confer additional rights on Travellers but will rather formalise their status.
The move has been described as 'historic' by the Traveller advocacy group Pavee Point.
Traveller organisations are expected to gather at Leinster House today to mark the expected announcement.
The status was recommended last month by the Oireachtas Justice Committee, which said Travellers were "de facto"
a separate ethnic group.
