Dublin hit-and-run victim dies

A 28-year-old man who was knocked down in a hit-and run-incident in Dublin has died in hospital.

Karl Robertson was out jogging when he was hit by a van on Hazlewood Drive in Artane at around 9.50pm on Wednesday night.

According to RTÉ, the van, a white Renault Megane, did not stop and was found burnt-out a short time later at Beechlawn Grove in Coolock, close to Parnells GAA Club.

A man in his 30s presented himself to gardaí last night and is helping them with their inquiries.

Detectives are also trying to trace another man who arrived at the scene and told people he saw what happened but left before gardaí arrived.

Gardai believe he is in his 20s but may not be Irish and they are anxious to speak to him.

A criminal investigation is continuing.

Mr Robertson was brought to Beaumont Hospital, where he was pronounced dead late last night, Thursday.

His sister Niamh Robertson earlier pleaded for information.

"Anyone who has done this, anyone who may have seen something, heard something, seen a car speeding around the area last night, anyone with any information, please, please, please contact the gardaí, even if it's anonymously," she told RTÉ News.

"I would expect the person who's done this to own up because it is a horrible, horrible thing to do to put anyone through that".

Ms Robertson said the family got a call from emergency services at around 11pm on Wednesday night.

"My dad answered, and they started asking him questions, and all I heard was 'yeah he was wearing blue shorts, he would have been out jogging'.

"I ran down the stairs and then they said we needed to go to Beaumont Hospital.

"I was trying not to think of it as too serious. I was trying keep the family positive, because my Mam broke down straight away, she nearly fell to the ground, it was horrible."

Gardaí say anyone with information on the incident or who saw a white Renault Megane van in the area of Coolock or Artane last night should contact Coolock Garda Station on 01 666 42 00, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
