Publican tops Sligo tax defaulter's list
Sligo publicans are among those to have paid more than 11 million in tax settlements in total with Revenue during the final three months of 2016.
The largest settlement in the region was John McDermott, (publican and farmer), Riverstown, Co Sligo.
A Revenue Audit uncovered an under declaration of income tax and VAT of 84,200.24. Interest of 34,023.19 was added plus penalties of 25,260.07 bringing the total to 143,483.50.
Two other Sligo publicans were levied for failure to hold a current liquor licence;
Padraig O'Dowd, (publican) Drury's Bar, Monastraden, Co Sligo had to pay 632
while Brian Taaffe, (publican) The Inishfree Bar, Ballintogher, Co Sligo had
also to pay 632.
Failing to lodge VAT returns cost Brian Flynn, Agricultural Contractor,
Enniscrone, Co Sligo the sum of 3,000.
Fergal Murphy, Strandhill Road, (Clothes Shop) had to pay 1,250 for failure to lodge income tax returns.
For selling illegal cigarettes, Derek Lynch, (PAYE employee),
Cranmore, Sligo was fined 2,500 and received a six month sentence, suspended
for six months.
In Leitrim, Thomas McHugh (butcher) Ballinamore, Co Leitrim was discovered in a Revenue Audit to have under declared a tax and VAT liability of 67,507, with interest of 35,039 and penalties of 21,811 the total amounted to 124,357.
