Sligo bids for a slice of football history today

SLIGO SEEK to overturn six decades of tradition and make football history tonight, Saturday.

The county has never once won the Connacht Under 21 GAA football title.

There have been several near misses but tonight a star-studded Sligo face favourites Galway.

Captain Darragh Cummins from the Calry, St Josephs Club hopes to make a bit of history and accept the cup.

Said Cummins yesterday: "I've heard that it's 53 years since the competition started and in a five-county province we've never even won it once.

''It'd be great if we could do it in the last year of it,'' he told Irish Independent. See link below.

The throw-in is at 6pm in Markievicz Park and sizeable local support is predicted.

Soccer Stalemate

Finally, the same two counties suffered a stalemate in soccer last night.

Sligo Rovers had already kitted out in Galway when a waterlogged surface forced the cancellation of the fixture.

It was a bad night for teams from the north west as both Finn Harps and Derry were beaten 3-2 in lost time added at the end of their games.

Last weekend Sligo Rovers lost all three points to Finn Harps after a 94th minute penalty.
