Villages, town renewal grants could hit €70,000

GRANTS UP €60,000 or €70,000 on average could be on offer to Sligo towns and villages in the latest renewal scheme.

MInister Heather Humphries expects up to 300 centres across the country to avail of the €20 million package she unveiled last month.

Sligo TD Tony McLoughlin was told in the Dáil that applications will close at the end of June for the extended grants package.

Economic Activity

Projects likely to be funded will have ''clear positive economic impacts on their town or village,'' the Minister indicated.

Particularly welcome, said Minister Humphries, will be projects ''which stimulate economic activity'' between a town or village and its neighbouring townlands.

This includes projects ''which demonstrate leveraging of, or linkages with, other schemes operated by Government Departments or agencies.''

Areas of interest, suggested the Minister, will be heritage, arts, culture, tourism, tidy towns, recreational facilities, re-use of vacant premises, vacant sites and energy efficiency schemes.
