Sligo/Leitrim TD Marc Mac Sharry has this morning submitted to the Office of Public Works minister the need for urgent deployment of resources to carry out the necessary reparatory works following damage caused by the recent gorse fires.
The damage caused is a threat to the Sligo Camino and other events over the coming months the Sligo based TD told Sligo Today.
In a notification to the Ceann Comhairle this morning, Deputy Mac Sharry said, "I would be grateful of you might consider including the following topical issue for today's business.
"That the minister responsible for the OPW immediately make available funds from the Minor Works Scheme or other resources for reparatory works to portions of forest tourist trials recently destroyed by gorse fires notably in County Sligo where the destruction of approximately 500m of an established tourist trail threatens the annual Sligo Camino held each July with between 600-1000 pre booked participants and if he will make a statement on the matter."
The Sligo Camino is held on the Sligo Way, a 34km walk from Dromahair, Co Leitrim to Coolaney in Co Sligo.
Responding later, junior Minister that funding for flood works was for flood works and repairs to forest trails did not qualify. He said the area affected was on privately owned commonage.
