Improvement work to begin on dangerous Cashel Gates junction

Since 2004 Cllr Jerry Lundy has been calling for junction improvement works at Cashel Gates on the N17, between Tubbercurry and Curry.

The Fianna Fáil Cathaoirleach of Ballymote-Tobercurry Municipal District told Sligo Today, "This is, without question, the most dangerous junction, on a bend on the N17, between Sligo and Galway. At long last, following yet another Notice of Motion tabled by me, (as Cathaoirleach) at the last Tubbercurry Municipal meeting, I was informed by the engineers that work would begin in the near future.

"104 people signed a petition back in 2006 requesting the junction to be made safe, and this was presented to the Council and the National Roads Authority (now TII) at that time."

An official response from T.Brennan, A/Director of Services for Sligo County Council stated that,  'A Licence Agreement has been received from CIE/Irish Rail to enable Sligo County Council/TII to carry out works over the railway line at this location so as to realign the junction of the local road with the N17.

The conditions of the licence agreement are currently being reviewed by Sligo County Council and subject to final sign off of this agreement and conditions therein it is expected that Sligo County Council/TII will be in a position to commence works in the very near future.'
