The Leas Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Keith Henry has welcomed the partnership between Ireland West Airport Knock and Stewart Airport New York. Cllr Henry was speaking following his attendance at the partnership where he represented Sligo County Council.
“This partnership offers a great opportunity for Sligo and the West of Ireland to reach new tourism and business markets along the East Coast of the US. Joe Gilmore as Managing Director of the Airport and his team have done fantastic work in trying to source new locations for flights that will provide mutual benefits for our region, the airport and their US destination” the Ballymote Fianna Fáil Councillor said.
“To be able to access New York and its wider catchment has the potential to bring in over €50 million in tourism alone to the region if flights were in operation several times weekly. Not to mention the convenience it would provide for people from the West wishing to visit family or holiday without travelling to Dublin or Shannon Airports” he added.
“Having met with the officials at Stewart Airport New York, there is a great desire among them to expand their services to Ireland and this partnership solidifies that desire to work together and benefit both our regions. Joe Gilmore and his team have already and will continue to work on sourcing an airline carrier to provide the route and any support the Councils who have an equity stake in Ireland West Airport can do, should be done” concluded Cllr Henry.
Sligo County Council Chief Executive Ciaran Hayes was also in attendance along with representatives of Mayo County Council.
