Sligo 'Repeal the 8th' fundraiser

Sligo Repeal the 8th Abortion Rights Campaign are hosting a fundraising Table Quiz and DJ Night in McGarrigles Pub, O’Connell St, Sligo on Friday August 11th.

This event is part of the national Abortion Rights Campaign Roadshow which has been taking place throughout the months of July and August across the country. Nationwide, support for the Roadshow events has been phenomenal and we have no doubt that the Sligo event will be just as successful.

The 8th amendment equates the life of the foetus with that of a woman, and is in effect a constitutional ban on abortion. This campaign aims to educate the public about the ramifications of the 8th amendment and ultimately seeks to remove the 8th amendment from the Irish constitution.

A little-known effect of the 8th amendment is its impact on the right to consent or refuse treatment during pregnancy and childbirth. The HSE National Consent policy specifically cites the 8th amendment as a barrier to consent in pregnancy. Therefore, women are prevented from having full control over what happens to their bodies during pregnancy and childbirth.

The UN has on several occasions admonished the Irish Government for “cruel and degrading treatment” of pregnant women and assert that the continued lack of abortion provision is a breach of the human rights of women residing in Ireland.

If you are passionate about women’s rights and wish to support our campaign, what better way to kick off your weekend!

With the fabulous Tara McGowan in the role of quizmaster, this promises to be a fun evening- you never know, you might even win a spot prize or two!  So get your egg-heads and dancing-shoes on and show your support for the local Repeal the 8th Campaign!

Tables cost €20.00 for a team of 4.  Start time is 8p.m sharp so turn up early to be assured of a table.   Groovy tunes with guest DJ’s #TurnItOn from 11pm onwards. All proceeds will go towards Sligo Repeal the 8th Abortion Rights Campaign.
