, Sligo's retired County Development Officer, has died at home over the weekend.
His brother Paul Byrne was also Sligo County Manager in the early 1990s.
Deceased was a key movers in the campaign to have the passenger train service between Collooney and Galway restored.
In 2010 Mr Byrne took part in a deputation to Transport Minister Noel Dempsey pushing for the return of passenger line.
He was also credited with establishing the Sligo Business Enterprise Fund.
funds from the Department of Finance, this was introduced at a time
when the main banks were not lending to small businesses.
In his retirement, the late Mr Byrne also addressed a summer school in Donegal on the theme of western development.
A chartered accountant by profession, he had been employed by the Department of Finance prior to his Sligo role.The
late Mr Byrne is survived by his wife Kathleen (Kay), two sons and
three daughters -- Declan, Carmel, Aengus, Cathriona and Marese.The funeral will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, to Sligo Cemetery after 11am Mass of the Resurrection in St Annes Church.
