People Before Profit (PBP) Sligo are delighted that a motion put forward by their councillor Gino O'Boyle which calls for a referendum to repeal the eighth amendment, was passed by Sligo county council earlier this week.
A spokesperson for PBP told Sligo Today
, "This is a highly progressive development and a welcomed expression of support and recognition for the rights of women in Sligo. The eighth amendment equates the life of a woman to that of a foetus or embryo and subsequently hinders the rights of all women during pregnancy."Councillor O' Boyle stated that 'it's important to understand the dangers of the eighth amendment and that it's removal from the constitution is crucial in order to deliver adequate health care for women'.
Gino's colleague People Before Profit representative Nigel Gallagher, adds that 'women of child bearing age across Ireland have never had a vote on this issue and it's imperative that we allow this generation to have a say on the matter'. The eighth amendment was passed in 1983, meaning that anyone under the age of 18 at that time or born afterwards, have never voted on the issue."
