The Sligo to Galway road (N17) was the scene of a tragic accident yesterday when three people, including one child, died in a collision involving a car and a truck. Two women in their 70s and 40s and a seven-year-old boy, three generations of the same family, were killed in the collision at Lisduff just after midday, while the truck driver was uninjured.
They were pronounced dead at the scene and a full investigation into the incident is underway.
The victims were named locally last night as Sean Wilson, his mother Marcella Wilson and her mother Mary Ann Wilson, all from the Binghamstown area of north County Mayo.
RSA spokesperson Brian Farrell said: "It's been a dreadful day for road safety in this country. If anything is to come from this loss of life, we would hope that it would serve as a reminder that using the roads is the most dangerous thing that we do each day.
"We would renew our call, to all road users to be vigilant when using the roads by slowing down, wearing seatbelts and not driving while tired or fatigued."
