Twenty-two (22) leading British coach and group tour operators have been visiting Sligo and the Wild Atlantic Way, as guests of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland. They were here to attend a workshop in Westport, where they met with Irish tourism enterprises to negotiate for their 2018 programmes.
The tour operators also took part in a fact-finding visit along the Wild Atlantic Way, to experience for themselves the high standard and variety of our tourism offering. Their itinerary included a guided tour of, and lunch at, Lissadell House and Gardens. They also took in a sheepdog demonstration with Martin Feeney, at the Atlantic Sheepdogs Farm, in Streedagh. They enjoyed dinner in Eala Bhán and an overnight stay in the Sligo Park Hotel.
Julie Wakley, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Great Britain, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to bring these top British tour operators to Sligo and the Wild Atlantic Way, to see and experience some of our many visitor attractions and to encourage them to extend the Irish content of their existing programmes, or to include Ireland for the first time in their 2018 programmes.
“Great Britain is a vital market for tourism to the island of Ireland. It delivers 47% of all overseas visitors and around 30% of all overseas tourism revenue. However, the decline in the value of sterling is certainly a challenge for Irish tourism from Britain right now, which means that competitiveness and the value for money message are more important than ever. Tourism Ireland is rolling out a really extensive programme of promotions this autumn – to keep the island of Ireland ‘front of mind’ with British travellers.”
