A dental clinic in Co Clare has been forced to close while an investigation is carried out whether drain cleaning fluid was used with water instead of a dental product.
HSE Mid-West has contacted the parents of 43 children who may have been affected and has launched an investigation into the incident.RTÉ
reports that the Dental Clinic at Bindon Street in Ennis, Co Clare has six surgeries, five of which were in operation at the time the incident is believed to have occurred on Wednesday.
HSE Mid-West said "early indications, yet to be confirmed, suggest that a drain cleaning product got mixed with the water used during treatment when normally the water would be mixed with an approved dental product".
The two children who presented at an emergency department complained of mild irritation to the mouth and feeling generally unwell.
Others presented at their GP whilst other parents were only informed either late last night or early this morning as to what had taken place.
The HSE is advising anyone who feels unwell to go straight to their GP.
HSE Mid-West Chief Officer Bernard Gloster said the incident was "regrettable and unfortunate. I want to apologise for any concern or upset caused to the children and their families".
"We are taking all of the necessary steps to ensure they are supported and have adequate information. We will be conducting a full review to establish all of the facts," he said.
