A new initiative aimed at men who are perpetrators of domestic abuse is to launch in Sligo next month and is presently taking referrals for the upcoming CHOICES Programme commencing in November. MOVE Ireland
provides domestic abuse intervention programmes for men where they are challenged to take responsibility for their abusive behaviours and to change their attitudes and behaviours and develop respectful, non-abusive relationships.
“Domestic abuse intervention programmes can allow men who are ready to choose to stop using abuse in relationships to take steps towards change. Sometimes these will be tiny steps, sometimes they will be great leaps. For most women and children in our research, lives were improved to some degree.”
Regional Coordinator at MOVE Ireland Ewa Fitzgerald highlighted the importance of such intervention programmes and said that, “They can make a real difference to the lives of those involved, including children who have been affected.
"I would encourage anyone that would be willing to participate in the programme and feels that they could benefit from it to get in touch.
"Confidentiality is a key part of the service. We would also ask anyone that maybe working to support the victims of domestic abuse or perpetrators to also consider the benefits of the programme.
