Fine Gael T.D. for Sligo - Leitrim Tony McLoughlin has announced this afternoon, Thursday, that €230,000 has been allocated to County Council Libraries in Sligo and Leitrim by the Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring T.D. under a new €3.83 Million Library Upgrade Scheme.McLoughlin advised “Sligo libraries will receive €122,000, whilst Leitrim libraries will receive €104,000. This funding is being allocated in support of the introduction of the new library strategy, Libraries Ireland 2018-2022”.
“The strategy will focus on increasing both the membership and the use of our public libraries in Sligo and Leitrim. It is envisaged that this will be achieved through improved promotion of the library service, development of the library workforce and continuing development of quality services that will attract an increased number of users and members over the five-year period of the strategy.
"The proposed investment by central and local government will significantly modernise the public library service, enhancing the range and quality of services available to users and, most importantly, providing a strong base to underpin the launch of the new library strategy in 2018.
“This funding announced today will support the introduction of self-service machines and other ancillary technologies in ‘non-RFID enabled’ libraries, it will supplement existing resources including book-stock relevant to business people and jobseekers.
"It will improve ICT facilities and provide spaces for users to seek information, work, meet and collaborate and it will support the purchase of book-stock for children, family reading and literacy development and complement the suite of activities being delivered by library services here” concluded McLoughlin.
