Fine Gael T.D for Sligo – Leitrim, Tony McLoughlin has announced the allocation of €1,354,889 in Sports Capital Programme funding for local clubs and sporting organisations in Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal in for 2017. Speaking after the sports funding has been announced McLoughlin stated that “I am delighted with today’s announcement by Minister Brendan Griffen. It means that sports organisations in Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal can continue to build and improve their facilities and purchase much-needed new sports equipment.
“We all know that playing sports is not only good for your health and wellbeing, but that it is a great way for children to learn different sports and give them opportunities to excel in a sport of their choice. This funding announcement will drastically help to improve the facilities on offer here.
“Now I know that some community and sports groups here who have worked hard on proposals for funding projects will be disappointed today because their applications were invalid. However, I am confident that there will be future opportunities again in 2018, where revised and improved applications can be submitted. ““The Sports Capital Grants were re-instated by the last Fine Gael Government in 2012 after they’d been cut by Fianna Fáil as a response to the economic crash.
“It is crucial we continue to invest in sport and the health of our population. We know that obesity is on the rise. Investing in sport is good for the health of the nation, both literally and economically, saving our health service money in the future continued McLoughlin.
