The recent announcement of a major engineering assessment of the Owenmore, Ballisadare and Unshin river systems has been welcomed by local Sinn Féin Councillor Thomas Healy.
“I have been highlighting the major flood damage caused throughout Collooney, Ballisadare and Ballygawley in recent years and the ongoing danger of a repeat of this flooding in each winter,” stated Cllr Healy.
“I have been lobbying the Council and have had a motion passed to include the river system from Ballinacarrow to Ballisadare in the forthcoming assessment by the JBA award winning Engineering and Scientific company.
"The agreement by the Council to now include the entire waterway in the study is very welcome.”
“I will be meeting with representatives of the company and the Council on Tuesday in order to show them the areas affected at first hand and also to let them meet some of the people who suffered from flooding.
"These include residents whose homes have suffered flood damage in addition to farmers and business owners who were left cut off due to extensive flooding. The whole idea of this is that funding will be made available to Sligo County Council for identified works after this study.
"I have met with Minister Kevin “Boxer” Moran on this matter and he has promised me that he will release this funding when the study is complete.”
