Sinn Féin is to field two candidates in the next general election in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency.
Two selection conventions are being held this coming weekend, with one in Sligo town on Sunday and another in Carrick-on-Shannon this Friday.
Sligo's Cllr Chris MacManus will seek a nomination for the Sligo /Nth Leitrim constituency. He was co-opted to Sligo County Council on the retirement of his father, Seán MacManus.
It is expected that after this weekend, the two Sinn Féin candidates will be Deputy Martin Kenny for Leitrim and North Roscommon and Cllr Chris MacManus for Sligo and South Donegal.
The possibility new young candidates being elected in several constituencies’ points to the emergence of a fresh new Sinn Féin leadership most likely to be Mary Lou McDonald TD.
The possibility of a general election happening at any time means that parties will have to be ready, even if the public are not that excited about it. Sinn Féin say they are preparing for it and this convention is one of the first signs in this constituency of the pre-election political groundwork being done.
