Mona shortlisted for top sports award

SLIGO IS in with a strong chance of taking RTÉ’s inaugural Young Sportsperson of the Year Award.

Mona McSharry from Grange was one of three names to make the shortlist announced yesterday evening, Tuesday.

The Sligo teenager won gold in the 100 metres breaststroke event at the World Junior Championships in Indianapolis last August.

Senior Level

The winner will be named at an event on Saturday night hosted by RTÉ Sports Department.

Meanwhile, McSharry has moved up to senior level and will represent Irish hopes this week.

She will compete in the European Short Course Championship, kicking off in Copenhagen later today.

Irish fans will be hoping she can make the 100 metres breaststroke final.....which also takes place on Saturday.

Also shortlisted for the RTÉ award are Kerry All Ireland Minor sensation Dermot Clifford and athlete Gina Akpe-Moses.

Olympic Games

Some fans online at RTÉ have already made up their minds, it seems.

“Mona all the way” tweeted Shane Murray while the tweet from ‘Bernard’ was more emphatic.

It said: “Has to be McSharry, different competing and winning at world level compared to European and especially National level.”

Finally, McSharry has her focus firmly fixed on being part of Ireland’s team at future Olympic Games.

These include the events in Tokyo in 2020 and Paris in 2024.

The Grange teen has already been shortlisted for both the Irish Times and Irish Independent Sport person of the Year Award.
