A 34-year-old man has died and two others were injured in a stabbing incident in Dundalk.
The incident happened on Avenue Road at around 9am.
The victim, who is from Japan, was attacked on the street and fatally stabbed.
Two other Irish men were subsequently attacked with an iron bar.
Gardaí who were called to the scene confronted and disarmed the attacker, who was armed with a number of weapons.
He is believed to be 18 and from Syria.
He has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being detained at Dundalk Garda Station. He can be questioned for up to 24 hours.
Gardaí are trying to establish a motive for the attack, including the possibility that it was planned.
They are also trying to establish if the attacker knew the victims or if they were attacked at random.
Three scenes at Avenue Road, the Inner Relief Road and Seatown have been preserved pending the arrival of the State Pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau.
