Fianna Fáil have begun the process of selecting candidates to represent the party in the next general election. Nomination forms were posted to members and Cumann Secretaries this week. Nominations can be made by a Cumann or by five voting members. Nominations must be returned to Fianna Fáil Headquarters by 5pm on February 7th, 2018.
Following the close of nominations, the National Constituencies Committee will then meet to decide an election strategy for the constituency and decide on a date for a convention to select the candidates. This would be expected to take place within weeks.Fianna Fáil selected three candidates Marc MacSharry, Paddy O'Rourke and Eamon Scanlon to represent the party in the 2016 General Election and a successful campaign resulted in party representation rising from no local TD in the 31st Dail to two TDs in the current Dáil.
Fianna Fáil have already held many selection conventions throughout Ireland and have candidates in place but due to the redrawn constituencies, party officers in this area decided to await the passing of legislation on the new constituencies before candidate selection would commence.
