Farmers say they will be forced to close their land to walkers along the Sligo Way if they are penalised for last summers fires.Ocean FM
reports that the Department of Agriculture has refused to payout on the land burnt on Killery mountain as well as land burnt in other counties around the country.
The Authorities tackled the fires for a number of days during a dry period last May.
But farmers say there’s no proof they started the fires and claim it could have been one of the hundreds of walkers who hike through their land daily.
Eddie Davitt, the Rural Affairs Spokesperson with the IFA in Sligo says these farmers will simply be forced to close their land to walkers.
