The fact that younger workers were losing significant income share as opposed to older workers was increasing year on year and was an unexploded bomb in communities.
This was suggested by Sligo-based Independent MEP Marian Harkin when she addressed EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs & Inclusion, Marianne Thyssen in the European Parliament in Strasbourg last week.
Speaking in the debate on the wealth divide, Marian Harkin said that the numbers working full time in 2017 was lower than 2008 while the numbers working part time in 2017 was 11.9% higher than in 2008.
“We also have a rise in bogus self-employment with many workers having no security whatsoever”, she said.
This situation raised an issue of intergenerational fairness which urgently needed to be addressed, Marian Harkin stressed.
